It just keeps on coming

I took a photo this morning of the snow that had fallen at the chalet over the last few days, haven't had the chance to get upto Avoriaz and see if the 50cm forecast had fallen.

This was 12 hours ago, it has been snowing of and on at the chalet all day, but when I got home midafternoon the snow had not yet started settling at our house some 300mtrs lower and 8km down the valley.
I just took this photo outside, it's dark so sorry about blur but you can get the idea.

This is the forecast for tonight.
That 25cm at 1200 can translate into twice as much at 1800.
Which ever way you put it thats loads of snow ( certainly more than the uk is getting ).
Along with (as yet unconfirmed ) reports of Avoriaz and Les Gets opening at the weekend, season is getting off to a great start.
Bring it on.

It's always the first day

Whether on camps or normal weeks we always have to make the effort on the first day to remind guests of everything you need to take up the hill. It's perfectly understandable as your not in the practise of having it all to hand.

Well today me and a couple of friends took advantage fo a lovely suny day and recent snow fall, and hiked the Arare. although in the end it was a great success and got some good powder turns and had the whole place to our selves, Paul left his boots behind and I left the memory card for the camera in the computer, Doh!

well I will just have to go again soon to get the photographic evidence of how nice it is looking up there, damn.

still puts a smile on your face though, well it did mine. Bagged first turnsof the season.

Love it when you get snow, showers and heavy in the same sentence

Having had a good early start to snow fall this year, a warm front came over on friday and it rained everywhere. This has left the lower slopes looking a little bare but was not enough to effect the upper slopes too much, in fact causing it to freeze solid and help build a good base. So all we need now is some fresh snow on top and it's time to get the snow shoes out.
Oh and look whats coming our way.

TOMORROW - MONDAY NOVEMBER 15
Morning fœhn wind - becoming quickly rainy in the afternoon - getting colder
SKY CONDITIONS (cloud - sunshine) : cloudy with sunny spells in the morning - becoming quickly mostly cloudy to overcast in the afternoon - period of sunshine close to 60%.
PRECIPITATION : starting up in the afternoon - moderate - rain-snow limit towards 2000 m, dropping towards 1200 m at night.
WIND - aloft : SSW strong -> SSE moderate - fœhn still strong in the valley at first.
TEMPERATURE : min +3°C - max +12°C.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 16
Unsettled - snow showers - improving later
SKY CONDITIONS (cloud - sunshine) : overcast - becoming mostly cloudy - locally cloudy with fleeting spell towards the evening - period of sunshine close to 10%.
PRECIPITATION : frequent and locally heavy showers in the morning - becoming scattered in the afternoon - rain-snow limit between 1000 and 900 m.
WIND - aloft : E -> N moderate.
TEMPERATURE : dropping highs.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK UNTIL FRIDAY NOVEMBER 19 2010
Wednesday : fairly sunny - slightly milder. Thursday : disturbance crossing over from the west - snow showers. Fiday : fairly sunny and cold.

These were taken on the way upto Avoriaz on Thursday. Plenty ridable already, and loads of people were hiking up and around town.

Mervin makes fun

I have been fortunate enough to see round the Burton factory in Vermont and it was an impressive visit and I don't want to take anything away from them, as no denying they make great snowboards, but it's a very different place from what you find at the Mervin factory. Theres no denying these guys love snowboarding, they love making boards and making snowboarding better.
